Episode 5 - Passion for Engineering and people with Alistair Guss

In this episode of the build Hatch Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from Alistair Guss from McCormack Associates.

  • Alistair is a natural-born engineer in math and science and always had a desire to pull things apart to discover how they work. 

  • Alistair was in the 1984 Olympics as a ski racer, all while completing his Engineering degree. 

  • Alistair, although an industrial engineer, did not follow the path of working in the family factory as expected.

  • The story of Alistair receiving his first job interview in 1987 with Tony MacCormack and making a choice between professional ski-ing and engineering.

  • Alistair is a Building Services Engineer and has an obvious passion for his work, even after 33 years with MacCormack Associates.

  • Alistair explains the role of a Building Engineer and the consideration of ‘diversity’ in a building from one side to the other.

  • In 1993 Alistair became a 50/50 partner of MacCormack Associates after less than 10 years in the industry.

  • Communication and working with clients is a passion for Alistair, which he accredits to ski-lifts!

  • Alistair’s perspective on young engineers graduating from University, along with differences in training, communication and big picture views.

  • Learning to work in a team and the fundamental differences between engineering roles.

  • In 2009, Alistair became involved in the wholesale Gas industry through OC Energy which has evolved, over time, branching into internet supplies among other things.

  • Alistair’s recalls his first ever job, working on a refrigerated display case.

  • Outside of work Alistair shares what gets him up in the morning.
